Today, according to Informa Telecoms & Media, 3.3 billion people in the world have a mobile phone which is a pretty incredible figure considering that it's roughly half the worlds population! What makes it even more impressive is the fact that the first mobile phone network was only switched on in 1981, 26 years ago.
Don't be fooled into thinking though that 50% of the worlds population have a mobile phone, on the contrary, the high figure is because many of the worlds western markets have reached over a 100% of penetration because many people have multiple phones for work and pleasure. But even if half the worlds population haven't quite got a mobile phone it won't be long with only 10% of the global population not covered by a cell phone signal.
With ever increasing numbers of mobile users, better and better technology and people placing more trust and reliance on their mobile devices there is a huge market for companies to exploit through web-based and e-commerce systems for mobile phones.
